Pearls In Mens Fashion
Can men wear pearls? Historically pearls were worn and prized by both sexes. Ancient rulers around the world adorned themselves with long ropes of pearls as a symbol of great wealth. Natural pearls are very rare. In 1917, Pierre Cartier bought the mansion on Fifth Avenue New York for US$ 100 plus a double string of matched natural pearls valued at over $ 1 million at that time.
This is now the famous Cartier store on Fifth Avenue – all thanks to a smart gentleman who traded a string of rare natural pearls to found the legacy of Cartier. Pearls are not just for women. Certainly you would not now expect to see a man wearing a string of pearls around his neck. In modern times those pearl necklace types are reserved for the ladies.
But pearls do find their way into men’s fashion in a number of ways. You find pearl rings, pearl cufflinks, pearl tie studs, pearl stickpins, mother of pearl watch bands, belt buckles, cufflinks and tie clasps, as just a few of the examples. There are two types of pearls. The first one is the natural pearl, which is found in nature but is very rare. The second type is the cultured pearl. This is the most common pearl and is created through the efforts of humans to introduce something that forms the “seed” into the oyster, to make the oyster or other mollusk grow a pearl. The Japanese have perfected the art of growing cultured pearls.
Pearls are made from calcium carbonate that crystallizes around the seed in concentric layers to produce a spherical result. The seed is an irritant to the oyster or mollusk and in its attempt to surround the irritant with stuff, the beautiful pearl is created. The mollusks can be either fresh water types or the types that can only live in seawater. Pearls come in all colors and sizes. Some of the most attractive ones for men are the black pearls. Please note that pearls may be dyed almost any color so black pearls are simply cultured pearls that have been dyed.
Can men ever wear pearls as a necklace? Let us offer you a “pearl of wisdom”(pardon the pun) about the most recent and most hip fashion trend. In Tahiti, men’s fashion includes wearing a single pearl of a nice large size that is drilled and strung on a simple leather cord and worn around the man’s neck. This fashion trend was noticed by world class surfers who visited Tahiti for the surfing and saw the local men wearing this type of pearl necklace. This style of necklace is worn by almost all the men there and it became adopted as part of surfer culture.
Now the necklace is referred to as the “surfer’s pearl” and has even been worn by Hollywood male stars at the Academy Awards. Yes, men you now would be at the height of pop fashion to wear a single surfer’s pearl as a necklace anywhere you want to look super hip and super cool and you don’t even have to be a surfer.
